Handicap StairLifts

"New Freedom for the Handicap Starts Here...."

Although all stairlifts are built to help those with mobility problems navigate stairs easily, not all are built specifically as handicap stair lifts.

Even though advertisements may identify stair lifts as being handicap stair lifts, in reality the vast majority of stair lifts cannot work safely for persons who are severely paralyzed.

Purchase Considerations

Handicap climbers are especially useful for persons with conditions more severe than joint problems.

These climbers are for use by people who, in most instances, are paralyzed and cannot stand at all or sit without assistance. The decision on what type of stair lift to purchase depends on a number of factors:

Can the user bear weight on their legs or bend their knees and move from a wheelchair to a regular stair lift.

Can the user control the calling mechanism, whether joystick or remote

Many handicap stairs are also wheelchair stair lifts; these are built to carry a wheelchair so that the user does not have the inconvenience of changing seats when moving up or down stairs.

In-home stairlift equipment for wheelchairs tends to be customized to the users' specifications.  Best of all, the stair climbers for the physically disabled can be installed on either the left or right side of your stairs.

Although available for use in homes, most wheelchair stairlifts are built for use outdoors and in public buildings to improve accessibility for the physically disabled.  Many of these have additional parts that act as a ramp for the wheelchair.

As noted above, handicapped stairlifts come in indoor and outdoor models. Those built to be used on outside stairs are weather-proofed for durability and safety.

In some instances the material used to make them is sturdier than those for indoor residential use since outdoor stair lifts face so much more traffic and exposure to the elements.

A high weight capacity is important in stair lifts, but even more so for handicap stairlifts.  Many users not only need a wheelchair, but also may have need to travel with oxygen supply paraphernalia.

Safety Features

However, stair lifts with a higher weight capacity are available on request. Special request handicap stair lifts tend to be more expensive than standard lifts.

In addition to weight capacity, handicapped climbers ensure users safety with a number of safety features like: seatbelts, and obstruction sensors.

Another important feature for a handicap stairlift includes the ability for the lift to stop and start smoothly. This is especially important to users with spine and other back issues.

Direct Current (DC) powered stair lifts are best suited for persons with back problems.

Whether they are true handicap stair lifts or not, climbers aid in restoring some degree of independence to their users.

This not only makes their users feel better about themselves, it also takes some stress off care givers.

Finally, when buying a handicapped stair lift, be sure to ask about warranties and back-up power options.

You may also want to find out about other controls for using the lift, depending on whether or not the user has hand dexterity problems as well.
